Keep our Seniors Safe during this August Heat

While it may be Mid-August, the summer heat is hotter than ever and seems to be sticking around! Yesterday’s mid 90 temperature is a strong reminder that these hot August days can be dangerous for the elderly. According to the National Institute on Aging, seniors are particularly susceptible to serious health complications from hot weather because their bodies are less able to regulate temperatures. Risks include heat exhaustion, heatstroke, sunburns and dehydration.

Given their risk, it’s important for loved ones and caregivers to be well equipped to handle these dangers and make sure your loved one is protected. Ten tips to help you ensure a safe and happy end of summer:

  1. Check on them frequently
  2. Air conditioning is vital
  3. Wear light and loose colored clothing
  4. Always wear sunscreen, hat and sunglasses
  5. Water, Water, and more water. Sometimes seniors need reminders to drink plenty of water
  6. When sitting outdoors, suggest shaded areas such as a porch
  7. Plan outings when the temperatures are not at peak hours, such as morning and evening
  8. Check their medications for sun related warnings
  9. Stay indoors during extreme heat days
  10. Last, know the warning signs of heatstroke. According to webmd.com symptoms can include:
    • Fatigue
    • Nausea
    • Headache
    • Excessive thirst
    • Muscle aches and cramps
    • Weakness
    • Confusion or anxiety
    • Drenching sweats, often accompanied by cold, clammy skin
    • Slowed or weakened heartbeat
    • Dizziness
    • Fainting
    • Agitation
