July is Sandwich Generation Month!

sandwich generation month

Are you part of the “sandwich generation”? The sandwich generation is the term that has come to be used to describe those among us who are sandwiched between the children that we are raising and nurturing and the aging parents who we are also taking more and more responsibility for. Being a member of the sandwich generation is in part the outcome of the last few generations waiting until they are more mature to have their children. Where earlier generations generally finished having their kids in their twenties, meaning that by the time they were forty and their parents were sixty the kids had flown the coop, now parents are in their, forties and fifties by the time their children are grown, and that means that their own parents are in their seventies or eighties, and in need of attention. At Rothamel Bratton, we recognize and respect that the sandwich generation faces multiple challenges, and that is why we are proud to recognize and celebrate the sandwich generation during the month of July and every other day of the year!

So how do you celebrate Sandwich Generation Month? Taking time for yourself and taking steps to minimize stress are two of the most important things that we recommend. The sandwich generation is known for feeling exhausted and overwhelmed, and it’s no wonder. Parenting is a big job on its own, and when you’re also doing the work of a caregiver it means that in addition to helping with homework, keeping up with the house and dealing with all of the angst that comes with young kids, adolescents, and teens (in addition to your own job), you’re also trying to manage things for older adults who may be increasingly confused or infirm. Try to get into the habit of setting aside a little time for yourself each day, even if it’s just 15 minutes, to relax, breathe, and regroup. The increased productive and mental health benefit that you’ll get from recharging your batteries will more than make up for the little bit of time that you lose.

One of the biggest sources of stress that we hear about from clients who are caring for their parents is that they don’t know what will happen when they are no longer able to meet their parents’ needs. That’s an area where we can definitely help. At Rothamel Bratton Attorneys, our Life Care Planning team helps families coordinate and manage the legal, financial and personal care issues that come with aging. A Life Care Plan helps our families coordinate and manage all medical services, helps you figure out how to pay for the necessary care – now and later – and includes legal protection to make sure your loved one’s assets stay where they belong – with your family. At Rothamel Bratton, our Life Care Plans are about ensuring dignity for your loved ones and peace of mind for you.
